Dark Tech Map Tiles

Robot on a map tileThe Dark Tech Map Tiles collection of art assets from Studio WyldFurr expands the science fiction theme of map tiles, this pack of assets has been designed to complement the Sci-fi Map Tiles set with a dark grungey alien theme. Perfect for creating otherworldly technological alien lairs for your players to explore.

“Deep in the forest stands a giant stone obelisk, sickly green light shines from the cracks in the dark marble surface of this ancient alien edifice. A single door automatically opens and permits the brave to enter, but none have returned from within the Obelisk. Do you dare to venture inside, and see what alien treasures await within?”

What is a Map Tile?

Each map tile depicts an area of terrain, such as the floor of a cave, an area of grass, or where the floor meets a wall. The map tiles are provided as ready-made art asset elements that can be pieced together on a digital canvas to form an adventure map that your players can explore. All Studio WyldFurr map tiles have a unique look-n-feel as each map tile is a combination of photographic source material combined with hand-drawn artwork. Rendered at a scale of three on-screen pixels to each real-world inch, resulting in a 180-pixel map grid size. This is also the same grid size and scale employed for Studio WyldFurr's virtual tabletop tokens.

How to use the Map Tiles

The express purpose of our map tiles is the creation of virtual tabletop adventure maps, using a block-by-block building method. The art assets can be employed in any graphics editing program that permits the use of imported image files. You could use any of the below Apps to build adventure maps with map tiles:

  • Photoshop - This is a professional-grade graphics editing program, and it is what we use daily. But is a bit $$$ if you're just creating adventure maps.
  • Affinity Photo - A powerful photo editing app without the price tag of Photoshop, a great tool for desktop publishing.
  • Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP for short, is a free graphics editing App. I recommend it, it's free to use and only has a small learning curve.
  • Fantasy Grounds - The virtual tabletop roleplaying App Fantasy Grounds includes a toolset for building adventure maps with imported artwork assets. So not only can you run your campaign in Fantasy Grounds, but you can build adventure maps in it too!

Regardless of which App you decide to use, the process is the same. Start with a blank map canvas, then plonk down map tiles one after the other to build up the design of your adventure map structure. Then same out the completed map as an image to be imported into the virtual tabletop roleplaying app of your choice.

We have demonstration tutorials based on livestreams from our artist Tailz building adventure maps on the Studio WyldFurr YouTube Channel.

Raw Image Files Art Assets Edition

This edition of the Dark Tech Map Tiles pack is designed for use by Game Masters who love building their maps and want access to a toolbox of ready-made artistic material rather than the hassle of designing their material from scratch. The map tiles within this package were designed to act as a library of art assets that a Game Master could simply just drag-n-drop onto a canvas to form a map.

The package contains a wealth of raw image files in JPG, PNG, and WEBP file formats. These image files form the building blocks which you can assemble into the form of a dungeon, fortress, monster lair, or whatever kind of adventure map structure you desire.

Simply start with a blank canvas inside the graphics editing program of your choice, for example, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or Gimp. Then start composing the form of an adventure location by grabbing a map tile from the library, then plonk it onto the canvas right where you want it to go. Keep placing down map tiles and your adventure map will take form like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Using map tiles permits very granular control over the form of your adventure map chambers and passageways, rather than relying on pre-constructed rooms which you cannot change. Once the structure of the map is in place, add the final touches by dressing your map with props and object tokens such as tables, chairs, statues, etc.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
