Hellfire

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Hellfire is a set of 1/300th (6mm) scale science fiction wargames rules which allow you to play a variety of different types of SF games, whilst managing to capture some form of unique flavour that makes the game more than just WW2 with las-cannons. The aim is to produce battles in a universe which isn't overly militarised. It is a universe where the black sheep of the family returns with a battalion of genetically engineered warriors he has hired, to be met by the family who have called out an ad hoc local militia. It is a universe where most armoured vehicles are improvised on site. I haven't provided any background with these rules, there’s no ‘official universe’ and nobody will insist on you using only one company’s figures. These rules are generic, clone warriors can battle with Yrchknight Hort riders, ECM troopers can jam guided missiles launched by power armoured space marines. The universe is out there for you to play with.

Hi Charles
I checked my copy. What has happened is that way back (in the original first edition which was written on an Amstrad PCW 8256) both i and lower case l were used. It did occasionally cause confusion so when I set to to do the second edition, I decided to get rid of one of them. I decided that actually it was i that didn't really serve any purpose and deleted it from the table, from memory it was replaced by more k.
All I forgot to do was to forget to delete the line explaining what happened when you got i. But there is no i, you merely have the lower case l which is correct. Sorry about that one

Hi Jim,<br />
I just purchased Hellfire and need some help with the reaction tables. The results show two different entries for letter "i" but that letter does not show up on the tables. Instead the lowercase letter "l" is on the table four times. Can you help me out?

This looks interesting, what size board is required to play the game, and what is a typical force size for the game?

Hi Robert
I tend to use a six foot by four foot table, but you can cut that down if you cut ranges and move distances.
If you go to my blog https://jimssfnovelsandwargamerules.wordpress.com/hellfire/ you'll find quite a few scenarios both for solo play or for two or more players. It'll give you some idea of forces and force sizes

And if possible... Hellswords & Sorcery as a supplement would be very helpful and give us a fantasy touch...

It is 'sort of on the list' :-)
If you read Hellfire Campaigns you'll see I took Hellfire back to Moghul India, so it probably won't be too difficult to drift it further back, and I've been toying with a magic system for years :-)

Jim, does it also work as a skirmish game... ?

To be perfectly honest, not really. What it does do is it can be linked to Hell By Starlight. That is the skirmish game. But the troop types are the same so you can lift sections out of a Hellfire game where you've got larger forces deployed and you can use the skirmish rules to play out one particular smaller episode. So if, for example, in the Hellfire game somebody has a squad of special forces hit the enemy HQ, you could play that little scenario out as a separate Hell by Starlight game :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
