Operation RI

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Operation RI is a game of moderate complexity for one or two players, simulating the Japanese overland advance on Port Moresby in 1942 and the subsequent Allied counter-offensive.

The game comes with a set of rules, charts and tracks, two maps, and two sheets of double-sided counters.

This is a print and play edition, the counters require assembly.

At least one six sided die will be needed to play the game.

Components:

Rulebook

Charts and tables

Set up cards

2 x maps (recommended print scale 11" x 17")

1 x half sheet of double-sided unit counters and markers (74 combat units and 12 markers)

1 x half sheet of 88 double-sided strength markers

Historical background and designer's notes

Comprehensive and illustrated examples of play

Scale: battalion and company

Map: point-to-point movement

Time frame: weekly turns

Solitaire suitability: very high

Design features: battle fatigue, jungle and mountain warfare, Allied air transport, Japanese bunker defences.

The Japanese have a chance to capture Port Moresby via the overland route using their seasoned infantry from the South Seas Force. The terrain will make it a difficult task. If they fail, the Allied forces will launch a counter-attack with the aim of driving the Japanese into the sea.

The system focuses on the effect prolonged periods of combat in difficult terrain had on combat units. Units which fight for too long without respite are vulnerable to counter-attack. Each side must manage their forces with respect to fatigue, which represents combat exhaustion and ammunition expenditure, and the inherent logistical difficulties this campaign posed.

Can the Japanese capture Port Moresby? In this simulation they can, but it is difficult.

Also challenging is the task of crushing the Japanese beachheads on the north coast.

v1.2 is now up, with some formatting changes and a typo fix - no changes to the rules or components.

Note: Break Contact No.4 will include an expansion, Operation RE: The Battle of Milne Bay.

another at-first-sight review after downloading... YEP it is gorgeous! And there is an impressive level of detail that shows a deep uderstanding of the topic.

Quick note: I printed out the rulebook (even though the rulebook says not too!). It is gorgeous. I'll be putting the counters together next week and hoping to play and review shortly thereafter.

Just from a display point of view, the components are top notch.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
